For the first time in history, Amsterdam hosts WorldPride. A global event that promotes visibility and awareness of LGBTQIA+ issues internationally. Two weeks full of love, freedom and connectedness and street theater. With spontaneous performances and Surprise Acts. An epic spectacle.

In 2001, the very first same-sex marriage was solemnized here. In 2026, we celebrate that 25 years of marriage equality has been possible — a milestone that worldwide is still not a given.

Resistance has many forms — WorldPride Amsterdam 2026 cultural identity with kaleidoscope patterns from the Netherlands, the Caribbean Netherlands, Indonesia, Morocco and Turkey

The kaleidoscope identity unites cultures from across the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

🎨 The power of patterns — Cultural identity

For the visual identity, a fan — or internationally a kaleidoscope — was chosen, in which countless cultures come together in a colorful whole. The patterns refer to centuries of exchange of art and culture through ceramics, textiles and traditions. They bring together Amsterdam, the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the many communities:

  • Netherlands — Delft Blue tiles, tulips and windmills
  • Caribbean Netherlands — Pangi (Suriname), Wanglo flower (Aruba), hibiscus and monstera (Curaçao), feathers from Aruban carnival costumes
  • Indonesia — Batik Kawung
  • Morocco — geometric motifs
  • Turkey — the national tulip

Additionally, the Kissing Boys andKissing Girls, inspired by the Schiffmacher Royal Blue Tattoo collection, refer to love in all its forms.

25 years of marriage equality in the Netherlands (2001–2026)

On 1 April 2001, the Netherlands became the first country in the world to open marriage to same-sex couples. Four couples — three female and one male pair — were the first to marry in the night of 31 March to 1 April, in the presence of Mayor Job Cohen at the Stopera. Now, 25 years later, marriage equality is a reality in more than 35 countries, but worldwide it remains a struggle. WorldPride Amsterdam 2026 celebrates this historic milestone with the Wedding Party XXL at Museumplein.

June 1, 2026

The Stonewall uprising 1969 — the origin of Pride

In the early morning of 28 June 1969, a police raid took place at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village, New York. This time, the patrons fought back — led in part by transgender people and people of color such as Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. The riots lasted several days and are considered the beginning of the modern LGBTQIA+ movement. A year later, on 28 June 1970, the first Pride parade took place in New York. Stonewall 50 – WorldPride NYC 2019 drew 5 million visitors and was the largest LGBT event ever. Pride began as protest — and that remains true.

March 15, 2026

Amsterdam as the LGBTQIA+ capital of Europe

Amsterdam has a long history as a pioneer in LGBTQIA+ emancipation. As early as 1946, the COC was founded — one of the oldest LGBT organizations in the world. In 1987, the first Gay Games took place in Amsterdam. In 2001, the Netherlands became the first country to open civil marriage to everyone. The Amsterdam Canal Parade, since 1996, has grown into one of the most iconic Pride events worldwide. With WorldPride 2026, Amsterdam confirms its position as the LGBTQIA+ capital of Europe — a city where diversity is not only tolerated but celebrated.

May 20, 2026

The economic impact of WorldPride

WorldPride is not only a cultural and social event, but also an economic engine. WorldPride Toronto 2014 generated C$791 million in economic impact. Sydney WorldPride 2023 brought in AU$664 million. For Amsterdam, comparable figures are expected: hundreds of thousands of visitors provide a huge boost to hospitality, hotels, retail, culture and tourism. Additionally, WorldPride generates international brand awareness and positions Amsterdam as an inclusive and welcoming city. The investment in WorldPride pays for itself many times over.

June 28, 2026

WorldPride and human rights worldwide

While in the Netherlands and many Western countries LGBTQIA+ rights are acquired rights, these rights are under pressure in many parts of the world. In more than 60 countries, homosexuality is criminalized. In some countries, it is even punishable by death. The WorldPride Human Rights Conference at the Beurs van Berlage brings together activists and policymakers from around the world to fight for equal rights. WorldPride is not only a celebration but also a platform for international solidarity and human rights defense. The WorldPride March on 8 August 2026 emphasizes that the struggle is far from over.

April 10, 2026

The kaleidoscope identity — cultural diversity

For the visual identity of WorldPride Amsterdam 2026, a fan — or internationally a kaleidoscope — was chosen, in which countless cultures come together in a colorful whole. The patterns refer to centuries of exchange of art and culture through ceramics, textiles and traditions. Delft Blue from the Netherlands, Pangi from Suriname, the Wanglo flower from Aruba, Batik Kawung from Indonesia, geometric motifs from Morocco and the national tulip from Turkey.
